12th-6th century BC. A pointed blade with straight sides, flanged hilt, the ricasso with two angular indentations on each side. See Maxwell-Hyslop, R., 'Daggers and swords in Western Asia: a Study from Prehistoric Times to 600BC,' in Iraq, Volume 8, 1946, pp.1-65, pl.V, fig.36; a similar sword is preserved in the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in Cambridge, no.34,95. 274 grams, 36.5cm (14 1/2"). Property of a London gallery; previously in a private UK collection formed 1980s-1990s. The sword belongs to type 36 of Maxwell-Hyslop classification. The indented ricasso could be used on pointed blades with straight sides, designed for thrusting or on a leaf-shaped blade, more suitable for cutting. Condition Report Fine condition.
