Mongol, 13th-14th century AD. Three iron arrowheads, one of trapezoidal shape, one fitted with a sharp triangular blade and a knob between the shaft and the blade, a third trilobate trapezoidal arrow, all three with holes for the application of incendiary material. See Golyzhenkov, N., Dzis, I., ????? ?? ?????, 31 ??? 1223, Moscow, 1994, p.6, 9, 17; Gorelik, M., Mongol-Tatar Armies, X-XIV centuries (in Russian), Moscow, 2002, p.61; Turnbull, S., Mongol Warrior 1200-1350, Oxford, 2003 pl.A. 70 grams total, 11-14.5cm (4 1/4 - 5 3/4"). Ex California, USA, collection formed since the late 1960s; acquired on the European art market before the late 1990s. Mongol quivers contained arrows with several types of arrowhead: poisoned arrows are known to have been used and there is a specific reference to them in the accounts of the Mongol invasion of Japan (1274 AD"). Others were fitted with incendiary material, others conceived to pierce cuirass and metallic protections, a result achieved by the powerful composite bow of the Mongols.
