14th century AD. A medium-sized broad iron axe with square socket. Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. In the Baltic countries, like Poland, this kind of axe was the most popular type, remaining unchangeable and continuing in use until the modern times. It appeared in the Baltic territories in the 13th century, probably under German influence. It belongs to the type IX of the Glosek classification. Condition Report Fair condition, cleaned and conserved.
