13th-15th century AD. A large broad axe with square socket, the left side of the blade decorated with X patterns. Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. The axe belongs to the type IX of Glosek classification. It was the most popular form of the axe which was unchanged and remained in use in Poland and the Baltic between the 13th and 15th centuries.
