1st-2nd century AD. An iron spearhead with forged seam, conical socket with holes for rivetting and medially ridged leaf-shaped point. See for similar typology Deschler-Erb, E., Ad Arma! Römische Militär des 1st Jahrhundert n.Chr. in Augusta Raurica, August, 1999, nos.54-64. 126 grams, 20.2cm (8"). Property of a London gallery; previously from a private British collection; formerly acquired from a European gentleman; acquired in the 1990s and earlier. The ridged sides of the point are indicative of superior forging and were provided for a better balance in flight. This spearhead belongs to a short lance or javelin, carried in numbers of three to six and thrown in battle against the opposing forces closed for the melee. Condition Report Fair condition, cleaned and conserved.
