15th-12th century BC. A palstave axehead featuring a square butt, leaf-shaped flanges on each side, blade splayed with a worn cutting edge. Cf. a similar specimen in Evans, J., The Ancient Bronze Implements, Weapons and Ornaments of Great Britain and Ireland, London, 1881, figs.53, 55, 56. 321 grams, 16.4cm (6 1/2"). Property of a Durham gentleman; from his father in law's collection since being found in Northumberland, UK, in the 1980s; thence by descent 2010. Condition Report Fine condition, cleaned.
