10th century BC. A bronze socketted axehead fragment with gently curving lower edge and D-section cutting edge, remains of loop. Cf. Lawson, A.J., 'Three Late Bronze Age Hoards from North East Norfolk' in Norfolk Heritage Explorer, 2013, pp.1-52, item 8, p.15, for the type. 138 grams, 83mm (3 1/4"). Property of a Durham gentleman; from his father in law's collection since being found in Northumberland, UK, in the 1980s; thence by descent 2010. The item presents a strong analogy with the Beeston Regis Hoard 1. Axeheads of this general character, plain with the exception of single or double beading at the top, occur in various sizes and have been found in considerable numbers all over Europe.
