7th-8th century AD. A bronze bow brooch comprising a central thick D-section bow, U-shaped with facetted ends; openwork terminals, formed as a pair of addorsed dragon heads, each with lobed snout and return scroll beneath the lower jaw; pin-lug and ferrous remains to the reverse. Cf. large ansate brooches in West, S., A Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Material from Suffolk, East Anglian Archaeology 84, Ipswich, 1998, fig.3(3) from Barham, figure 11(1) from Brandon, figure 98(5) from Ipswich, figure 123(3) from Playford; and a less decorative equal-arm brooch from Niederbreisig, Germany in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession number 17.193.294. 13.50 grams, 43.01mm (1 3/4").
