11th-12th century AD. A bifacial lentoid-section lead figural statuette, a standing figure in low raised relief to both sides, each with individual characteristics. See Fuglesang, S.H., 'Viking and medieval amulets in Scandinavia' in Fornvännen 84, Journal of Swedish Antiquarian research 1989, pp.15-27, figs.1, 7. 5.6 grams, 25mm (1"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously in a UK collection since the 1980s. During the Viking Age, figural motifs, including bracteates, may have been worn as amulets. One such group consists of small bronze or bone statuettes of sitting men, with those that can be securely dated originating in the 11th century. These ithyphallic figures are sometimes taken to be a model of the fertility god Freyr which are mentioned as one of the cult statues in the Temple of Uppsala, while other statuettes of bearded men are interpreted variously as Thor or Odin.
