14th-15th century AD. A heater shield-shaped horse harness pendant with integral suspension loop; the field in red enamel with three reserved lions passant gardant; traces of gilding. Cf. Ashley, S., Medieval Armorial Horse Furniture in Norfolk, East Anglian Archaeology 101, Dereham, 2002, items 50, 51 and 67. 9.8 grams, 37mm (1 1/2"). From an Essex antiques gallery; formerly in a 1980s private collection. The royal arms of England were gules, three lions passant gardant or from 1198 AD to 1340 AD and again from 1360 AD to 1369 AD; from 1340-1360 under King Edward III they were quartered with the arms of France Azure semé of fleurs de lys or and this style continued until 1395 AD.
