A bronze belt mount bearing a stylised lion advancing left in low relief within a rectangular border; an attachment rivet to each corner, one over the lion's head and another part way along the tail. See Bailey, G., Detector Finds 7, Witham, 2011, p.50, fig.62. 8.9 grams, 31mm (1 1/4"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection; previously acquired in Munich, Germany, between 1992 and 1996. The most popular buckle amongst the Normans was the D-shape. This remained in use for many centuries and often featured the lion as a heraldic symbol.
