A gilt sheet-silver discoid repoussé mount with beaded frame around a sexfoil border, at the centre a regardant wolf or canine advancing left, one leg raised, with sharp claws and shaggy tail; pierced for attachment. Cf. Egan, G. and Pritchard, F., Dress Accessories 1150-1450, London, 2002, fig.1300 for the type. 2.5 grams, 35mm (1 1/4"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection; previously acquired in Munich, Germany, between 1992 and 1996. The highly fanciful beast is broadly comparable with those in marginal drawings of many manuscripts from around the middle of the 14th century.
