A Pair of Japanese cloisonne bottle vases, late Meiji Period (1868-1912), worked with peony scrolls within leaf tip and floral bands, 23.5cm high Provenance: The present lot was brought back to England by The Reverend William Wills, the Baptist Missionary to China. Wills was stationed in Chouts'un from 1885 until his retirement in 1902. He received the vases as a gift after sheltering two men who were fleeing from Peking during the Boxer Rebellion. This lot is accompanied by several documents relating to Wills, his work in China, an extract from the Missionary Herald 1907, and the history of the vases.
