二十一歲，大師赴藏學法。 去大昭寺拜謁文殊菩薩像時，親眼見到文殊菩薩面帶微笑。其名故有“嘉木樣協巴多杰（意爲妙音笑金剛）”之稱。 在布達拉宫大師又一次見到了第五世達賴喇嘛，此時達賴喇嘛年事已高。大師來到無數學者聚集處哲蚌寺。途中聽見哲蚌寺内吹法號，以爲吉祥之兆。抵達哲蚌寺那天，從一位學僧手中借讀了一遍略本《菩提道次第廣論》後，記住了大義，然後將此文放在頭頂上祈禱祝願。祇看了一 遍，就把大致内容看懂了。
