Bust of Annius Verus; Rome, 170 A.D. White marble. It presents damages caused by the passage of time. Measures: 46 x 34 x 20 cm; 55 x 34 x 20 x 20 cm (with base). Marble bust of Marcus Annius Verus Caesar in round bulk. The bust reflects the portrait of a very small boy, with relatively long hair partially covering the ears. The eyes, not articulated, look unfocused in a distant point. The cheeks are full, and the lips are slightly compressed, almost smiling. The piece finds great similarities with the marble bust preserved in the Musée de l'Arles Antique (Arles, Provence, France); it was found in the ancient theater in Arles (1847) / Head of Marcus Annius Verus Caesar. Louvre Museum, Paris. Department of Greek, Roman and Etruscan Antiquities, Denon, first floor, room 25. Marcus Annius Verus Caesar (born 162 or 163 AD) was the son of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and the empress Faustina the Younger. Annius became Caesar on October 12, 166 AD, along with his brother Commodus, being designated as co-heirs of the Roman Empire. Annius died on September 10, 169 AD, at the age of seven, due to complications from surgery to remove a tumor under his ear. His death left Commodus as sole heir. Dimensions 46 x 34 x 20 cm; 55 x 34 x 20 x 20 cm (with base).
