A carved limestone head of an angel with a narrow fillet to the brow retaining thick flowing locks; the facial features with deep-set lentoid eyes, pert nose and narrow mouth with thin lips; probably from a tableau depicting the Annunciation; mounted on a ctom-made stand. 12.8 kg total, 31.5cm (12 1/4"). Collection Schickler-Pourtales, France. Ex central London gallery. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is apanied by AIAD certificate number no.11120-184130. The messenger who brings the news to Mary of her impending pregnancy, despite her virgin stat, is often identified as Gabriel the archangel.
