Probably Ferrara, c.1470-1480 AD. An incised slipware sgraffito footed bowl with splashed amber and green colouration, patella-shaped body with broad rim, central profile bt of a lady facing left, wearing an elaborate headdress, landscape with tree enclosed by a wattle fence behind, scrolled leaves to the rim with stylised leaves and buds to the exterior, a flaming tazza to the underside of the foot. 860 grams, 27cm wide (10 1/2"). Collection of John Winter, London, UK. Ex central London gallery. Apanied by a copy of a detailed academic report. Incised slipware vessels were produced across northern Italy in the late medieval period, with the principal centres of production located at Ferrara and Venice. The example offered here displayed features of Ferrarese slipware, particularly the central motif of bt against landscape. One function of such wares was likely as love gifts between men and women during a period of betrothal or a wedding. The lady portrayed on the bowl has a stern, authoritative air and the appearance of an intended portrait. The motif on the fence has been associated with the imprese of Borso d'Este (duke 1450-1471), it may also be interpreted as an evocation of hort concl (enclosed garden),monly ed to symbolise the purity of the Virgin, a meaning which was refashioned in betrothal or matrimonial contexts to signify a giardino d'amore, or garden of love. The amatory nature of this bowl is made explicit by the flaming tazza hidden from public view on the base. [No Reserve]
