S graffitto design Playing boys was made by engraving lines and pressing a reed or bamboo tool through engobe, a clay slip painted on the unfired vessel. A transparent glaze was added before firing a kiln. Height: approximately 8 in. = 20 cm; Width: 5.5 inches = 14 cm; Weight: 2 lb. 12 oz.= 1280 g. While the Mongol occupation destroyed much, it also shook China free from the static traditions and techniques of the late Southern Song and made possible many innovations, both in painting and in the decorative arts. The north was not progressive, and the main center of pottery activity shifted permanently to the south. The northern traditions of Jun and Cizhou ware continued through the Jin and Yuan, bolder but coarser than before. New shapes included a heavy, wide-mouthed jar, sometimes with decoration boldly carved through a black or brown slip or painted in two or three colours.
