A Very Rare Chinese Yue Iron-Splashed Celadon Earthenware Chicken Head EwerSouthern DynastiesSturdily potted with an ovoid body rising to a waisted neck with two molded rings and then flaring to a galleried rim; there is a short spout in the form of a chicken-head, and a long-arched handle terminating in a dragon head grasping the mouth rim of the ewer; the ewer's shoulder has three equally spaced iron splashes; and circling the shoulder stopping before the spout is a detailed molded four clawed chilong with a long tail, one of the iron splashes pouring over its side. The ewer is covered all over with a grayish-celadon crackle glaze, stopping at the foot, the flat base burnt orange in the firing. Height 10 1/4 inches. Provenance:The Jade Dragon, Ann Arbor, Michigan Note:While there are examples of Yue celadon ewers of this type that have small iron spots on the spout and body, this rare example displays three large iron splashes and has a fully molded, detailed chilong circling almost the entirety of its body. See Christies Hong Kong 5 October 2015, lot 73 (Realized price HKD 187,500) for a chicken head spout ewer with only several small iron spots.C Property from the Collection of Steven J. Harvis
