In cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, numerous silversmiths' guilds were established, specialising in refined pieces that were in great demand both in the local market and abroad, especially from Europe. In terms of decoration, the artists often used Chinese elements, as is the case with the dragons on the exquisite box shown here, but often under the influence of the Art Nouveau prevailing in the West at the time. Special mention should be made of the meticulous decoration on all sides of this box, which features an interesting high relief, achieved by means of embossing and chiselling techniques, virtuously executed by what was undoubtedly a master silversmith of the highest level. The gilt lettering on the lid, which in Chinese means 'Congratulations', and the inscription below seem to indicate that this precious object wasmissioned as a birthday gift for a lady of good family.
