BronzeChina / Tibet , 19th centuryDimensions: Height 30 cm Wide 24 cm Depth 11 cmWeight: 5071 gramsThis impressive statue of many-Mahakala captivates our gaze with its many details. The base is made of an oval lotus flower with decorative edge. The dharmapala deity is shown with several heads, arms and legs and is standing in a wide stance embracing his consort in yab yum position. They are standing on other many-headed figures, also flanked by a fawn and a bird. Both are wearing short dhoti with beaded decorations and beaded jewellery. The consort is raising her hands above her head holding a filled skull cup or kapala and a skinning-knife in crescent-shape called gri-grug. Her left leg is swung around his waist. Mahakala's prominent face has the shape of a bull topped by another two heads with the top being that of a Buddha. All Mahakala heads have a fierce expression and skull crowns. The many arms are fanned out in a circle holding various objects of Tantric Buddhist symbolism. The couple is framed by a mighty fiery halo.
