BronzeIndia , 18th century or earlierDimensions: Height 15 cm Wide 15 cm Depth 4 cmWeight: 406 gramsThis depiction of Shiva as a cosmic dancer is one of the most popular ones and called Nataraja. Every gesture has a meaning and there are numerous variations. Here he is trampling on a small dwarf called Apasmara symbolizing spiritual ignorance, balancing with grace while the other leg is hovering mid-air. His eight arms are fanned out in a circle around himself, either showing mudras or holding some of his attributes like the drum or the fire Agni. He is dressed in a short dhoti and a wide range of jewellery. His head is tilted to the left, a large headdress decorates his hair and his smooth, symmetrical face has a friendly, calm expression despite this mighty dance in the contrasting forces of the universe. He is surrounded by a flaming halo.
