Bronze with SilverTibet , 18th centuryDimensions: Height 10,5 cm Wide 7,5 cm Depth 4,5 cmWeight: 322 gramsSamvara is one of the yidam or meditational deities of Tibetan Buddhism. His name can be translated with "obligation" or "vow". Usually he is depicted with many heads and many arms, but this statue shows him with with only one face and two arms. He is shown in yab yum position embracing his consort tightly. They are standing on two prostrate creatures on a lotus flower base with beaded rim. Both are wearing beaded jewellery and a skull garland is hanging down between their legs. Samvara is holding two vajras in his crossed hands while his consort has both arms raised above her head, holding a skull cup and a kartika, a crescent-shaped knife. We see a skull tiara on her head. The union between those two is a metaphor for the bliss-inducing fusion of tantric meditation.
