A PAIR OF CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL 'DOUBLE-GOURD' VASES18th centuryEach enamelled with two pairs of round reserves enclosing the charactersda ji, great auspiciousness, against a red ground with gilt wires within a turquoise enamelled border, all against a dark blue ground enamelled with red bats amongst dense trailing leafy double gourd vines with white blossom.24.5cm (9 5/8in) high (2).For further information on this lot please visit theCondition Report: General rub and wear with scratches and pitting to the surface. Some losses to the enamels in the reserves and some areas where the colour got darker.One of the vases with a dent to the lower belly and o the opposite side a dent to the foot. The other with more enamels wear, especially to the neck and the waist.Provenance: With its numerous seeds and swelling form, the gourd was a natural symbol of fertility. The extensive network of vines and tendrils symbolise continuity and generations of descendants.
