FUKUSHIMA TAISAI Two Lacquered-Bamboo Kiseruzutsu (Pipe Cases) Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century (2)FUKUSHIMA TAISAITwo Lacquered-Bamboo Kiseruzutsu (Pipe Cases) Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th centuryEach of muso-zutsu type and decorated in gold and coloured takamaki-e, one with ginkgo leaves, the second with a sprig of fruiting yabukoji (Ardisia japonica), each with a gold rim and cord attachment, each signed in gold lacquer Taisai within a black-lacquered oval reserve. Each pipe case approx., 21cm (8¼in) long. (2).The first character of the signature is identical to that used by Ikeda Taishin (1825-1903), the leading pupil of Shibata Zeshin, and it is therefore likely that Taishin was Taisai's master. For further details of the artist, please see E. A. Wrangham, The Index of Inro Artists, Alnwick, Northumberland, Harehope Publications, 1995, p.280.
