It was originally given the name Aramanty when it was first discovered in 1898 in the northern part of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. Additional finds in the region were made in 2004 (Ulasitai), 2005 (Xinjiang b), and 2011 (Akebulake). Each of these finds were given their own name, but it was later surmised that they were all part of the same meteorite and it was renamed Aletai.
