c.6th century A.D. A radiate-headed broochposed of a semi-circular head plate with lobes to the base, decorative nicks to the edge, quatrefoil punch marks to the body, carinated bow with lappets to the base decorated with horizontal grooves, continued in clusters below on the foot which tapers to a circular terminal, where the quatrefoil stamp marks are repeated; remains of pin lug and catchplate to reverse. 6.83 grams, 44 mm (1 3/4 in.) Found whilst searching with a metal detector, Isle of Wight, UK, on 14 March 2015. Recorded by Isle of Wight Portable Antiquities Scheme Liaison Officer with reference numbers SZ 39673 and BNG 86958. Recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) with record number IOW-5A2E21, and apanied by a copy of the PAS report. The PAS report states 'This isle of Wight brooch ects influence from across the North Sea, possibly through workshop contacts or immigration' and suggests a date of 'c.AD 450-525'.
