5th-6th century A.D. A small-long brooch with notched rectangular head, carinated bow and tapering foot with a lappet to either side and notched terminal; remains of pin lug and catchplate to reverse. 5.77 grams, 44 mm (1 3/4 in.) Found whilst searching with a metal detector, Isle of Wight, UK. Recorded by Isle of Wight Portable Antiquities Scheme Liaison Officer and recorded under record id.IOW-9B02C7. Apanied by a copy of the Portable Antiquities Scheme report number IOW-9B02C7. The PAS report states that 'this object was originally thought to be made from silver, and so was reported as potential Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996, it is in fact made of significantly less that 10% precious metal and so does not fall under the stipulations of the Treasure Act.' This small-long brooch is smaller than is typical, althoughparable examples have been excavated from the cemetery at Great Chesterford and Wasperton. The shape of the foot is also unusual, finding closest affinity with miniature bow brooches. Its form may therefore have been influenced by brooches of Continental manufacture. [No Reserve]Condition Report: Fine condition.
