6th century A.D. A bronze chape from a scabbard formed as a central columnar body with facing mask above, two lateral spurs formed as birds in profile; pierced for attachment. Cf. Menghin, W., Das Schwert im Frühen Mittelalter, Stuttgart, 1983, item 91. 6.51 grams, 33 mm (1 1/4 in.) Found Cambridgeshire, UK. The facing male mask flanked by birds of prey is believed to represent Woden, the war-god, with ravens on his shoulders; this motif appears later in Scandinavia as Oðin with his ravens, Huginn and Muninn.Condition Report: Fine condition; rear clip absent.
