A cloisonne disc brooch, roughly lozengiform in plan with raised central circular setting with pellet border, remains of white paste in the central cell, circular collet at each cardinal point, bifurcated scroll motifs between, remains of gilding; remains of pin lug and catchplate to reverse; Weetch Type 20. The Portable Antiquities Scheme, record id. SF-68E55B, for this item. 10.6 grams, 29 mm (1 in.) Found with the use of a metal detector near Great Whelnetham, Suffolk, UK, on 1 March 2014. Property of a Suffolk, UK, collector. Apanied by a copy of the Portable Antiquities Scheme report no.SF-68E55B. Such brooches are identified as having a distribution centred on the south-east of England and as being a particularly English product with influences from European (Byzantine/Germanic) gold work.
