14th-15th century A.D. A bronze finger ring with ellipsoid bezel, undulating flange to the rim, intaglio with Latin inscription 'DEO' ('to God' or 'for God') between two Latin crosses. Cf. Portable Antiquities Scheme no.SWYOR-3D2CA1, for similar shaped ring found in Yorkshire. 9.64 grams, 21.85 mm overall, 17.34 mm internal diameter (approximate size British K, USA 5 1/4, Europe 9.95, Japan 9) (1 in.) European art market before 2000. Acquired on the UK art market. Collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman. Religious dedicatory inscriptions on rings were verymon in the Middle Ages. The ring could also have been offered as an ex-voto in fulfilment of a grace received. It may also have been worn as a protective object, invoking the presence of the Almighty (in this case DEO = with God) or expressing a dedication to Him (DEO = to God).
