15th-16th century A.D. A pilgrim's badge in the form of Mary and the infant Christ on a crescent moon, stylised bird below, pellet detailing; pin to reverse. Cf. Mitchiner, M., Medieval Pilgrim And Secular Badges, London, 1986, p.234; cf. Spencer, B., Pilgrim Souvenirs And Secular Badges, London, 2010, fig.159a. 2.3 grams, 26 mm (10.9 grams total, 41 x 34 mm including case) (1 in. (1 5/8 x 1 3/8 in.)). Found Thames spoil, City of London, UK. The concept of the Virgin and Child standing on a crescent moon had gained popularity by this period, adopted as the subject of luxurious Renaissance jewels, the ever-changing nature of the moon contrasting with the steadfastness of the Virgin Mary. Strictly speaking, this type is likely an early 16th century derivative of earlier Walsingham badgesmemorating the Assumption of Our Lady, which evolved into the theme of Mary in her Glory, to Mary in her Glory upon crescent Moon, to Mary with infant Christ upon Crescent Moon.
