View in Venice of San Giorgio Maggiore from the Bacino di San Marco, with the Dogana on the rightsigned 'J. Vivian' (lower left)oil on canvas 75 x 126cmProvenance:J & W Vokins, London;Wood Hall, Hilgay, NorfolkJane Vivian was a topographical painter who exhibited a number of paintings at the Society of British Artists including views of Venice, Bruges and Rouen. She is now best known for her views of Venice, having first exhibited a Venetian view from a London address in 1869. Vivian continued exhibiting mainly Italian scenes until 1877. Around 1880, she moved to Birmingham, where she exhibited from her address at Islington Row until 1888. She also exhibited in a number of provincial galleries including the Manchester City Gallery, The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Royal Hibernian Academy.Framed 117 x 167.5cmThe painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The paint layers are stable overall. Two vertical lines of damage are present which may suggest the painting has been folded at some stage in its history. The damage has been repaired but the texture is mismatched to the original and the overpaint has become pale overtime. The varnish is thick, glossy and slightly yellowed.
