The canvas is unlined but fragile with a lack of tension. At the left hand edge the tacking edge has torn and the canvas is coming forward, out of the frame with localised distortions. The thick paint layers have developed a network of age cracks which are now pulling the canvas forward. There are some raised cracks across the surface. The varnish has been affected by mould and has become matte and uneven in the areas of the background. Mrs EastonThe painting is in a better condition than its pair, but is starting to show the same signs of degradation and aging. The canvas is slightly slack but appears less fragile. The thick paint layers have a network of age cracks which is starting to pull the unlined canvas forward out of plane. The paint layers appear to be stable with no evidence of raised or lifting paint along the cracks. The varnish has slightly yellowed but is glossy and even. Mould has formed on the surface of the painting and on the inside of the glazing.
