Fille du Vicomte Emile Léon Abbéma, elle est l'élève de Charles Chaplin, Jean Jacques Henner et Carolus Duran. Elle accède à la notoriété grâce à un portrait de Sarah Bernhardt qui est également sa compagne. Féministe affirmée, elle fait partie de la délégation des femmes françaises artistes présentées à l'Exposition Universelle de Chicago en 1893.
