Montelius, O., 1895-1910 La civilisation primitive en Italie depuis l'introduction des métaux illustree et decrite par Oscar Montelius, Stockholm, 1895, Serie A, pl.7, and Serie B, pl.90, 94, 195, 219, 307, 318, 349. 636 grams total, 31 x 21 cm including case (12 1/4 x 8 1/4 in.). Acquired before 1950. With Pierre Bergé & Associés, Paris, 16 December 2015, lot 189 (part). Property of a French collector. Apanied by copies of the relevant Pierre Bergé & Associés catalogue pages. A series of brooch decorations made from glass have been noted as peculiar to Early Iron Age and Etruscan contexts in Central and Northern Italy. Their full distribution, however, extends from Central Italy northwards as far as Poland, but is concentrated around the Northern Adriatic. These decorations take the form of a leech-shaped agglomeration of glass formed on a rod, which has then been decorated with the addition of trails of differently coloured glass wrapped around the glass matrix. These trails of glass are marvered flush with the surface of the main body of glass before beingbed in alternate directions to create a feathered or chevron design. In the Iron Age in Picenum graves (South Italy) many examples of carved and raw amber were found. Amber was used also for decorating fibulae and sometimes these pieces weighed almost a kilogram.
