A gilt bronze figure of the goddess Avalokiteshvara with 'a thousand arms' and many heads, modelled in the round standing on a lotus flower atop a tiered, trapezoidal plinth; each of her eight main arms holding an attribute: a water flask, lotus blossom, a bow and arrow, a dharma wheel and prayer beads, with one hand held in the mudra of generosity; wearing richly ornamented bangles and necklaces and a tiered crownposed of human faces; ornate, detachable aureole to rear; spray of arms also detachable; elephants and floral motifs to plinth; floral stamp to base. 1.96 kg, 33 cm high (13 in.). Ex Japanese collection of Buddhist art 1970 onward.
