2nd century A.D. A redware fragment from a plate or a bowl, featuring winged Eros riding a dolphin in raised relief to the rim. Cf. Spasi? Duri?, D., ???? ???????????-The city of Viminacium, (in Serbian), Pozarevac, 2015, fig.47, for similar redware with dolphin. 74 grams, 12.6 cm (5 in.). Acquired 1960s-1990s. Late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister. The dolphin was among the animals sacred to Aphrodite, but in Graeco-Roman mythology, was also considered to be the animal apanying the souls of the dead into the afterlife. [No Reserve]
