Description
Translation provided by Youdao
3rd century A.D. A double-edged sword blade, wide and parallel cutting edges tapering towards the triangular point, battle nicks to the sides; shallow blood channel and remains of the tang. Cf. Lebedinsky, I., Les Sarmates, Amazones et lanciers cuirassés entre Oural et Danube, VIIe siècle av.J.C.-VIe siecle apr.J.C., Paris, 2002, p.122. 428 grams, 63 cm long (24 3/4 in.). Dutch collection, circa 2000. With Mr D.V.B., Netherlands, 2017. Property of a Sussex, UK, teacher. Findings from the Hungarian Sarmatian tombs (Hortobagy-Poroshat, Haidudorog-Szallasfoldek, Gesztered) show the existence, between the end of the 2nd and the beginning of the 3rd century A.D., of long swords found without the metal elements of the scabbard, with a slightly longer length than those from Eastern Europe. The scabbard chapes, of the U or discoid type, suggest that this typology was a Roman or Germano-Roman style (spatha).
