Late 19th-early 20th century A.D. A pole-arm naginata having a curved blade zukuri of possibly older date, the tang nakago with two fullers mekugi-ana and horimono, brass small junction collar habaki, black lacquered wood shaft naka, with copper-alloy bands and fittings (sujgane) and a later metallic butt cap replacement. Cf. Turnbull, S., Japanese Warrior Monks AD 949-1603, Oxford, 2003, pl.A, pp.45, 62-63. 1.05 kg, 174.5 cm long (68 3/4 in.). Acquired from an Essex, UK collector by exchange. Property of an Essex gentleman. Originally the naginata (from nagu, nagiru = to mow, cut) was the characteristic weapon of the warrior monks, but from the 11th century, this long pole-arm found use among the Samurai, and especially among the Ashigaru (infantry) who used it to cut at the legs of horses; this example possibly dating from the Russo-Japanese War period.
