16th-17th century A.D. An iron left-handed daggerposed of a slender lozengiform blade and tapering, rectangular-section tang; discoid pommel and oval cross-guard with bulbous terminals; cross potent inlaid into the blade. Cf. for a similar blade ákovský, P., 'Medieval and early modern weaponry from the collection of the Hunting and Forestry Museum in Úsov in Moravia' in AMM VII, 2011, pp.105-159, figs.17-18. 178 grams, 37.5 cm (14 3/4 in.). German art market, 1990s. Mr A.H., a North American collector living in the UK. The left hand dagger was a category of small weapon used in Europe during the Middle Ages and the late Renaissance, until the 17th century. These weapons were used in conjunction with duelling weapons such as the rapier or the strip. Their English name (parrying dagger) highlights how they were intended more for parade and defence than as a simple dagger.
