Circa 6th century A.D. A gilt chip-carved mount fragment with raised parallel edges, low-relief Style I Tiermensch motif within rectangular frame, rectangular cell with polished garnet cloison inlay, bordered by a series of parallel grooves. Cf. Hammond, B., British Artefacts vol.1 - Early Anglo-Saxon, Witham, 2009, item 1.2.2.2-b, for type; 1.2.1-g, for garnet mount. 5.35 grams, 31 mm (1 1/4 in.). Acquired 1990s. J. Layne collection, USA. The chipped corner of the garnet shows the flush mounting technique of the cloisonné ornament. The garnet's surface is lightly chipped and scored. [No Reserve]
