11th-13th century A.D. A rectangular sheet-silver diadem with rounded terminals, divided by pointillé borders into ten segments, each presenting a pointillé saltire, Christian cross or floral designprised of lozengiform petals; both terminals pierced for attachment. 12.4 grams, 40.5 cm (16 in.). Property of a London collector; from her family's private collection; formerly with a London gallery; acquired in the 1990s. The Crusader states, (the Latin East or Outremer), were created following the First Crusade of 1095-1102 A.D. in an attempt to keep hold of territorial gains made by Christian armies in the Middle East. Diadems, attached to fabric bands, were worn by wealthy men and women in this era, often in funerary or burial contexts.
