14th-15th century A.D. A pewter pilgrim's pendant for Boxley Abbey, Kent, depicting the Rood of Grace preserved there in the form of Christ crucified with INRI inscribed above and spoked terminals to the cross arms, the reverse bearing a representation of the reverse of a coin showing a long cross and pellets as seen on English Medieval coins; with a small card giving details. See Spencer, B., Medieval Finds from Excavations in London - Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges, Museum of London, 2010, pp.165-167, for information. 3.45 grams, 34 mm (1 3/8 in.). Found on the Thames foreshore, London, UK. Acquired on the UK antiques market between 1974-1985. Albert Ward collection (part 4), Essex, UK. The Abbey at Boxley, Kent, became a popular stopping place for pilgrims travelling between London and Canterbury; the Abbey held a 'miraculous' Rood which is said to have had eyes that cried tears and a mouth that spoke. When the Abbey was closed during the dissolution period in 1538 A.D. and the Rood removed, it was reported that the figure was discovered to be an automaton with moving eyes and mouth parts operated remotely by strings.
