Roderic Barrett, British 1920篓2000 - Don Quixote, c.1948; oil on canvas, with artist's label attached to the reverse of the stretcher, 61 x 46 cm (ARR) Note: Roderic Barrett made a series of works on the Don Quixote theme, the 17th century Spanish epic by Miguel de Cervantes, beginning in the 1940s and continuing into the 1950s. The subject allowed the artist to explore folklore, symbolism and myth in his own highly individual vision. Barrett was given his first solo show in 1948 at The Hilton Gallery, Cambridge, which included works on this theme. The artist became president of the Colchester Art Society, succeeding Cedric Morris. The group also included John Nash and Arthur Letts-Haines. Please refer to department for condition report
