Belt plaque such as the current lot was popular during the Tang, Liao, and Song dynasties. Silkworm as decorative objects or motif were seen in works of art since as early as the Shang dynasty in jade and metalwork. During the Tang dynasty, silk production reached a pinnacle point, and naturally silkworm and mulberry as decorative motifs have been found in Tang dynasty metalwork.
