Victorian Staffordshire quill holders were popular in the mid-19th century. The potteries worked hard to create examples in all sorts of charming motifs to keep up with the demand, most often including naturalistic interpretations such as birds and their nests, children with animals, or single animals. This example is an exceptionally pretty one. The surprised mother bird with gold highlights on her feathers. She has a black beak and eyes, with a crown of red top feathers. Danger is portrayed in the shape of a snake entering the nest that contains three speckled eggs. The nest was lavishly painted in mauve, green and orange. The colors alle together to make a beautiful nest. This piece is in excellent condition, with only a teeny chip that is more felt on the edge of one wing than seen. A thick blue glaze has helped protect this piece for some 160 years. This is a quality piece and well worth adding to one’s collection. It measures about 2-3/4 inches high and 2-1/2 inches in diameter.
