Description

A Korean inlaid celadon glazed meiping vase, dating from the Koryo Dynasty, 13/14th century. the tapering body rising to high round shoulders and surmounted by a short waisted neck with galleried rim, the exterior decorated in Sanggam black and white inlay, depicting floral branches and four cranes in flight amongst swirling linear design, covered overall in a crackled sea green glaze Sticker on base: "Mathias Komor Works of Art New York"H. 10" (25.4 cm)Provenance: collection of a private Maryland collector ,purchased from Mathias Komor Works of Art in New York prior 1987 Catalogue Note: the intricate slop- inlay process involved several steps, to achieve the black and white patterns the designs were first incised or cut into the clay after it reached a leather hard state, the intaglio motifs were then filled in by brushing white or reddish brown clay slips over the recessed areas and carefully shaving the surface of the ware to remove any excess slip, it is generally believed that two firing were necessary to produce inlaid celadons: an initial low temperature biscuit firing and for the inlay process and a final high temperature firing after the application of the glaze.Link to HD Natural Light photos: Click here for high resolution imagesCondition: good condition overall with general surface wear and firing imperfection to the bottom
