Tibet, 19th/20th centuryThe hollow box of standard ogival shape, fronted by a silvered lid intricately reticulated in motifs of mythical beasts and auspicious emblems and adorned in five turquoise colored cabochons surrounding a central window, the sides supporting opposing sturdy loops for suspension. 10 1/4in (26cm) high
|Used by travelers for worship and protection, such portable shrines are unique to the Tibetan culture. They are carefully kept on domestic altars when not in use.
