Dated by inscription to 1926Of horizontal rectangular section, unusually depicting industrial development along the riverside in the Baihuazhou area of Nanchang, the inscription including the Minguo shiwu nian date as well as bearing a signature reading 'made by Shiheng in the Jiangxi Army Garrisons' [Shiheng zhi yu Jiangxi Junxie].15in (38cm) visible width of porcelain
|It was the Baihuazhou district of Jiangxi in 1926, the specific time and place depicted in this lot, where Chiang Kai-Shek launched his 'Northern Expedition' against intransigent Northern Warlords and the Beiyang government. The inscription alluding to military barracks or garrisons, the industrial subject matter, and the small figures in what appear to be military attire walking along the bottom border of the image would suggest the manufacture of this lot could possibly have been influenced by those events.
